Learning fall vocabulary is much easier when children have pictures they can look at, name, and match. My fall vocabulary flashcards give preschool and kindergarten children a hands-on way to learn seasonal words while playing simple matching games.
The set features 24 fall-themed items, including pumpkins, acorns, colorful leaves, scarecrows, squirrels, tractors, and raincoats. Children can learn the names of familiar autumn objects, match pictures, and begin connecting written words to their meanings.
Each vocabulary word comes in three different card styles:
- Picture and word cards: Colorful illustrations with the matching word underneath.
- Picture-only cards: The same illustrations without labels, for naming and picture matching.
- Word-only cards: Written words for matching with the correct pictures.
Having three versions means you can start with simple picture activities and introduce written words when your child is ready.

Start with picture matching
For younger preschoolers, I’d begin with just four or five picture cards rather than putting the entire set on the table.
Choose familiar items such as an apple, pumpkin, leaf, and squirrel. Ask your child to name each picture, then find its matching picture and word card.
If a word is unfamiliar, say it together and talk briefly about the picture. A child doesn’t need to know how to read to enjoy the first matching activities.
Once the pictures are familiar, bring out the word-only cards. Children who are beginning to recognize written words can use the labeled picture cards as a reference while finding the correct matches.
Fall flashcard games to try
You can use the same cards for several activities, so there’s no need to introduce everything at once.
- Three-way matching: Find the picture, picture with word, and word-only card that all belong together.
- Fall memory game: Choose two matching sets, turn the cards face down, and take turns finding pairs.
- What’s missing?: Lay out a few fall pictures, let your child look at them, then remove one while their eyes are closed. Can they remember what’s missing?
- Sort the pictures: Group the cards into categories such as fall animals, harvest foods, clothing, and nature.
- Find the word: Show a picture and ask your child to find its matching word card. Keep a labeled picture card nearby for help.
For a preschool fall theme, I’d start with picture matching and sorting. Word matching is a natural next activity as children become more comfortable recognizing letters and printed words.
Preparing the fall flashcards
The cards are arranged four to a page with black borders separating each one. Simply print the sets you need and cut them apart.
Regular printer paper works, although cardstock gives the cards a sturdier feel for repeated handling. Laminating is optional if you want to use them throughout the season.
You also don’t have to print all three sets immediately. Picture and word cards work on their own for introducing vocabulary, while the additional sets give you more matching options.
The cards fit easily into a homeschool fall theme, a preschool literacy center, or a small group activity. Keep a few sets together so they’re ready whenever you want a quick vocabulary game.

More fall word activities
If your child enjoys learning the names of fall objects, my ABCs of Fall booklet adds handwriting practice with seasonal pictures and traceable words.
Children who are ready for more reading practice can also work on common high-frequency words with the fall sight words worksheets.
